"This book contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on EuroPLOT Persuasive Technology for Learning, Education and Teaching (IWEPLET) 2013 which was held on 16.-17.September 2013 in Paphos (Cyprus) in conjunction with the EC-TEL conference. The workshop and hence the proceedings are divided in two parts: on Day 1 the EuroPLOT project and its results are introduced, with papers about the specific case studies and their evaluation. On Day 2, peer-reviewed papers are presented which address specific topics and issues going beyond the EuroPLOT scope. This workshop is one of the deliverables (D 2.6) of the EuroPLOT project, which has been funded from November 2010 – October 2013 by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Commission through the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLL) by grant #511633. The purpose of this project was to develop and evaluate Persuasive Learning Objects and Technologies (PLOTS), based on ideas of BJ Fogg. The purpose of this workshop is to summarize the findings obtained during this project and disseminate them to an interested audience. Furthermore, it shall foster discussions about the future of persuasive technology and design in the context of learning, education and teaching. The international community working in this area of research is relatively small. Nevertheless, we have received a number of high-quality submissions which went through a peer-review process before being selected for presentation and publication. We hope that the information found in this book is useful to the reader and that more interest in this novel approach of persuasive design for teaching/education/learning is stimulated. We are very grateful to the organisers of EC-TEL 2013 for allowing to host IWEPLET 2013 within their organisational facilities which helped us a lot in preparing this event. I am also very grateful to everyone in the EuroPLOT team for collaborating so effectively in these three years towards creating excellent outputs, and for being such a nice group with a very positive spirit also beyond work. And finally I would like to thank the EACEA for providing the financial resources for the EuroPLOT project and for being very helpful when needed. This funding made it possible to organise the IWEPLET workshop without charging a fee from the participants.

Lattice Calculation of Quarkonium Decay Matrix Elements

We calculate the NRQCD matrix elements for the decays of the lowest-lying S- and P-wave states of charmonium and bottomonium in quenched lattice QCD. We also compute the one-loop relations between the lattice and continuum matrix elements.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX. Talk presented at the Quarkonium Physics Workshop, University of Illinois, Chicago, June 13-15, 199

Lower body design of the ‘iCub’ a human-baby like crawling robot

    Get PDF
The development of robotic cognition and a greater understanding of human cognition form two of the current greatest challenges of science. Within the RobotCub project the goal is the development of an embodied robotic child (iCub) with the physical and ultimately cognitive abilities of a 2frac12 year old human baby. The ultimate goal of this project is to provide the cognition research community with an open human like platform for understanding of cognitive systems through the study of cognitive development. In this paper the design of the mechanisms adopted for lower body and particularly for the leg and the waist are outlined. This is accompanied by discussion on the actuator group realisation in order to meet the torque requirements while achieving the dimensional and weight specifications. Estimated performance measures of the iCub are presented

The Management of the Hypertensive Patient in General Practice

Hypertensive disease has been recognised for many centuries. References to the heart and the consequences of high blood pressure are to be found in many ancient writings. The incidence of the condition has probably increased. There is a relatively high incidence of the condition in relation to other important diseases, such as diabetes meliitus and pernicious anaemia. This is demonstrated by the incidence of these diseases in my own practice. The family doctor is well placed to study the condition. He sees the patient first and is able to observe the early signs and symptoms of the illness. It is usually he who is first aware of the complications of the illness and it is almost certainly he who supervises the medical and nursing care of the patient in the terminal phases of the illness. Management of the patient suffering from hypertension involves not only drug treatment but many other factors. These factors are discussed. in this thesis, a description is given of the ways in which a family doctor encounters hypertension, and the various factors which influence the disease. Diagnostic methods are discussed with particular reference to the resources available to the family doctor. The results of treatment as seen by the family doctor are are described. The extent of the problem with reference to one general practice is described, in this practice of 4,600 people, there were ninety six patients who merited the diagnosis of hypertension. The manifestations of the condition seen in this practice are described. Gases other than idiopatnic encountered in this practice are described, thereby illustrating the rarity of these cases. The recognition of the established disease process is discussed and the grades which are recognised are described. The treatment of the condition is discussed from the point of view of the family doctor. It is shown, by reference to my own practice, that the treatment is nearly always along simple lines. It is only rarely that the powerful ganglion-blocking drugs are required. It is also shown that the prognosis, particularly in women is good. Hypertension is no more a disease entity than a skin rash, a fever or anaemia. It is a measurable manifestation of an illness which has widespread effects on the body. The factors which influence the disease are numerous, and these factors may undergo qualitative and quantitative change at various stages, even in the same patient. The family doctor is uniquely placed to study this complex but interesting illness

Using an ontology for interoperability and browsing of museum, library and archive information

    No full text
Ontologies play an important part in the development of the future ‘semantic web’; the CIDOC conceptual reference model (CRM) is an ontology aimed at the cultural heritage domain. This paper describes a Concept Browser, developed for the EU/IST-funded SCULPTEUR project (semantic and content-based multimedia exploitation for European benefit environment (programme IST-2001-no. 35372); May 2002 to May 2005), which is able to access different museum information systems through a common ontology, the CRM. The development of this Concept Browser has required mappings from the legacy museum database systems to the CRM. The crucial process of creating the mappings is described, using the C2RMF catalogue (EROS) and library databases as a case study
